During the two hour bus/ferry ride to Inis More we got to talking about how different it would be to live here. For example, they don't have Walmart or any one stop shop for that matter, they have to pop in to places all over town to get all of their errands done. They also apparently don't have paper towels, which isn't a bad thing, just an observation that every bathroom I've been in has only had the air dryers, no towels.
Once on Inis More we grabbed bikes and I went ahead and embraced my hipster side, rolling up my right pant leg...man there were walls every where...one of our fellow explorers was telling Sara that he went on a tour yesterday and learned that some walls were to indicate property lines but also at some point the King told the Irish that they could just build walls and he would pay them a penny a day so many of the walls are called Penny Walls, still not clear if that was what we saw or not though.
The highlight of the day was the cliffs at the end of our bike ride. It was here that I discovered that it seems Jeremy is scared of heights. Sara walked right up to the edge and plopped down with her feet hanging off this massive cliff...I however crawled on all fours all the way to the edge but remained completely on the ground so that no sudden gust of wind could knock my ass off...even then as Sara got closer to the edge and started getting braver I was just worried. As is apparent by the pictures you will eventually see, Sara was basically hanging off the edge, at times with hand holding her belt, others times I wasn't going to get that close...while I kept more of a distance....In the picture here note that I have no real idea how close I am to the edge or even how far down it is...Sara is perched above and is far closer to the edge where she is to take this shot.....On a side note, I feel that the entire country of Ireland is one big natural selection process, there are no guard rails, there are no rails on any drop offs, there aren't even warning signs...I believe it's a crap shoot if you're stupid enough to fall off an edge than you were too stupid to realize it was dangerous and deserve your fate....the crazy cliff where we at lunch was huge, massive and there was nothing, no warning sign, no rails, nothing.....we could've jumped or walked right off the edge...I also think that if I lived nearby I would threaten people by telling them to 'walk east'...which would lead them right off that cliff (mwaaahahahaha).
Another random observation from the day (Sara makes notes during the day to remind me :)....what do people on these small islands do for work? Why do they live there? I mean, I know it's beautiful, but there's just nothing there aside from tourists...
Mmmm...I wonder that too. Why do people choose to live isolated like that? A lot of it is probably what people are accustomed to. It's hard to miss what you have never had. And there is something to say for a simple life. I think that being an island really complicates things, too. But I dearly love visiting places like this, so it's a good thing some people are happy to stay. And they are just as happy to have us come and spend money so that they can live there. It's a symbiotic relationship!
