Savannah

Today it rained, but luckily not enough to render our bikes useless. So we continued to explore the city by bike and found ourselves at Gryphon which was recommended by my mother and reported to have a Harry Potter like feel which it did. It's a cafe run by SCAD students and has a fun, cozy, library like atmosphere with really yummy food.



After easily returning our bikes and grabbing one more Vanilla Coke we hit the road to return home.

Overall it was a nice, relaxing escape from Orlando.

Savannah by Bike

Today we rented bikes and cruised around town at our own speed. We rented from Sekka which was really close to our hotel and we timed it so we could do the super affordable 24 hour rental and return the bikes just before we planned to return home tomorrow. Savannah is DEFINITELY a bikeable town.

Among other things, we had lunch and Vanilla Cokes at Leopold's, went around Forsyth Park gawking at houses, stopped to swing at a playground for a bit and even went on the tour of the Mercer house.

We finished our day with a massive seafood feast at the Cotton Exchange on River St. We had grand plans of watching dueling pianos but opted for sleep instead.

Ghosts in Savannah

I originally had looked into renting an apartment in Savannah but because we aren't staying three nights it got complicated so instead I went with the Inn at Ellis Square even though it's really just a Days Inn and we were quite impressed. It's really centrally located and really nice inside.

Once we got all checked in we grabbed a quick bite to eat at the Olympia Cafe right on RiverSt. which was a great decision. It was fast and really yummy. Having been to Greece I was still impressed by their baklava.

After our quick dinner we went on a ghost tour...yes, I know, I hate scary things but I figure I'll never know if I don't at least try...It was freezing out so we went with a Trolley Tour and it had a pickup/drop off right next to our hotel which was awesome. It wasn't so bad really, more history than scare tactics, though Jeremy would've preferred more scare tactics.

We stopped by one house where every woman who has lived there has committed suicide to the point where a politician has bought the property and won't let anyone live in it to protect the women of Savannah....


Another stop was an old hospital that was super creepy, all of the noises and construction stuff just added to it..



I survived though....honestly the cold was more annoying that the ghost tour.

Anniversary in Savannah

This weekend marked 6 years since Chris and I became an Us. We wanted to do something special especially since we don’t make a huge deal out of our wedding anniversary. We started off with plans to go to Paris, but as it got closer the flights filled up and it was too risky. Then we were going to Rome but at the last minute his schedule was changed and we didn’t have enough time. THEN we were going to go to Cincinnati, my car has been up there for Chris to use but with him in NYC now we needed to bring the car home. I had a little road trip planned that would take us to West Virginia (new state!) and then down through Savannah. BUT we didn’t make the flight to Cincinnati. So, disappointed we decided we’d had enough with pass riding and hopped in the car and drove to Savannah. It was really nice.

Our hotel was a little far out but it was free thanks to my points. We took a tour with Savannah Dan which was a lot of fun and really informative. We had a good time wandering the streets, going into shops and admiring the old architecture. There was a definite New Orleans vibe. While we liked the old oaks, the parks and the general quaintness of the city, I was disappointed by the pollution. There was a lot of trash and homeless people and it smelled like urine everywhere we went. They happened to be shooting a movie, The Conspirator, while we were there and we got to see the set used for the scene were Lincoln is shot. That was cool.

The first night we just grabbed a bit at a place along the river. I had a salmon club sandwich which was different, but yummy. We split some crab dip that was out of this world. It was affordable too only $7. But on our anniversary we wanted a nice place so we got a recommendation from Savannah Dan. We went to Noble Fare and it was AMAZING! We split some shrimp bisque as an appetizer, then they brought us some yummy bread with three different dippers. Then they brought us fresh pear sorbet to ‘cleanse our pallets’ then I got Snapper and Chris got Lamb. Both were delicious. We hadn’t planned on having desert (I had my eyes on a caramel apple from the river front) but our server convinced us to try their Chocolate Lover's Cake - definitely worth it. The whole meal with a glass of wine was about $110 after tip. Very nice – highly recommended.

Because it was close to Halloween we got to see all the kiddies with their costumes. We happened to be there when they did “wag-o-ween’ and all the locals were out with their dogs in costume, collecting doggie treats from the local shops. A little over board but cute and creative.

On the way home from Savannah we made a pit-stop in St. Augustine which has a special meaning for us since that’s where Chris took me on our first anniversary. We wandered around a bit, they also had a little Halloween function going on. We tried to find somewhere new to eat dinner, but we wound up back at O.C. Whites which is where we ate during our 1st anniversary celebration. We at outside and enjoyed the weather and then had a nice ride home.
