Italian Toast

Last time I saw Fabio was in June when I came with my brother. While here we had a conversation with Fabio and Adrian about American cooking - they all think of Johnny Rocket's when they talk about typical American food. We were so disturbed that we tried to make some for them but found it very difficult to find the ingredients on the Italian supermarket, for example Maple Syrup, Bacon and cans of soup, all hard to find. I had to drizzel melted chocolate over French Toast which sounds good but was very dry and too rich.

So, this time I brought a box of food so I could show them what typical American food is with a focus on comfort food. Last night we made Rice Krispy Treats, which were a big hit. This morning for breakfast we made "French" Toast Italian style, we brought Maple Syrup and ground cinamon - this too was very popular, Fabio practically inhaled and which is very unusual for him. Adrian requested that I make it again before we leave on Tuesday so he can watch and learn to make himself. I think we will have to send a barrell of Maple Syrup to them:)

Right this minute it is 7ish in the evening and there are Brownies in the oven. When they are done we will prepare Oven Baked Chicken, Green Bean Casserole and Mashed potatoes. Finally, we plan to make a Chicken Noodle Casserole one night as well.

Any suggestions for other "typical" American dishes are very welcome. Eventually Adrian and Fabio will come to stay with us and I will be cooking for them every night.

PS - they liked Mini Mama's note and airplane.

  1. Just as an update, we made dinner and it was all a big hit. They both liked the Shake'n'Bake, Mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. The brownies and ice cream were especially popular (thanks mom).

  2. I'm so happy that the cooking went well. Did you end up using olive oil for the brownies? It's interesting that the dishes you cooked weren't complicated or expensive. Just simple food that evidently translates well! I thought the airplane would make you all smile, and it was especially appropriate since you are only allowed to send toys that are made of wood to Italy. I packed the box before I even knew that! Love and miss you both.

  3. No olive oil for brownies. I googled it and found that olive oil has too strong of a flavor. I was able to translate vegetable oil into italian - Canola Olio - so Fabio could get some for us.

Fabio doesn't eat much ususally, but he had seconds of the chicken, casserole and the brownies. So it was definitely a success.
